BMW, which stands for Bavarian Motor Works, is a German Automobile Manufacturer that is known for producing both luxury and sports vehicles. The company was first established in 1913 by Karl Friedrich Rapp, and was originally used to produce engines for planes. Even the modern symbol for BMW is a representation of a propeller that spins. The company had a large amount of success, and by 1916 they had been awarded a contract to build V12 engines. After the end of the first world war, the manufacture of planes was banned in Germany, and this forced the company to close the factory and begin producing railway brakes instead of aircraft engines. By 1919 the company had successfully designed an engine that could be used for motorcycles. |
